Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes sequel Latest News
The director/producer of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” discusses developing a “prequel and a sequel” to the beloved series.
When Charlton Heston’s character George Taylor realizes that the terrifying Planet of the Apes he arrived on is actually Earth in the closing scenes of 1968’s Planet of the Apes, he pounds his fists into the sand. One of the most iconic shots in movie history was created as waves smashed into Heston and the deteriorating remains of the Statue of Liberty gradually became visible.
Not only did that scene astound viewers, but it also had an impact on a young Wes Ball, the director and producer of 20th Century Studios’ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which hits theaters nationwide this weekend.

(The movie, which is certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, will also be shown everywhere on premium screens in IMAX®, Dolby Cinema®, 4DX, and ScreenX theaters.)
Ball stated this week, “I had very early memories of watching the 1968 original movie on TV.” “I was drawing a lot from the images that were kind of ingrained in my mind while I was making this movie.”
Following three ground-breaking movies (2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes) that have earned a combined $1.6 billion at the global box office, Kingdom is the most recent installment in the Planet of the Apes franchise.
The story of a young ape’s terrifying trek throughout a new empire is told in the new movie, which is set several generations after War. According to Ball, Kingdom is a “sort of a prequel and a sequel” because it takes place after the events of the first three films but before the events of the 1968 classic, continuing Andy Serkis’ Caesar storyline that concluded in the previous trilogy.

“We wanted to create a new chapter in this long legacy of Apes films, following Caesar’s storyline, where the character goes from Pinocchio in Rise to a Moses figure in War,” Ball stated. “We brought in a fresh energy, a younger persona, and a new character who will re-discover a world alongside us, the viewers.”
The movie keeps many of the distinctive elements of the previous Planet of the Apes movies, such as the cutting-edge special effects that use performance capture technology to bring the apes to life, even if Ball and company are creating a new Kingdom.
In addition, it employs technology to create a run-down post-apocalyptic environment where towering buildings have been overtaken by trees and rusted ships have washed up on shore.
“This film is designed to depict the immense communal vision that arises when we visit a theater as a group. It’s intended to be large, Ball remarked. “You just want to lose yourself in this world, which is so vivid and rich in detail.”
Ball claims that the Planet of the Apes franchise has a narrative that serves as “a mirror to ourselves and reminds us of what it means to be humans,” rather than only being about special effects and world building.
