Islam Makhachev easily defeated Alexander Volkanovski in the lightweight title rematch at UFC 294 following five close rounds in their first meeting.

In the opening round, Makhachev used a head kick to take Volkanovski out, and he quickly ended the bout with strikes to the ground.

Just eleven days ago, Volkanovski entered the fight to replace Charles Oliveira, who had to be pulled due to an injury. Following the bout, he declared that his time as a lightweight fighter “is done” and that he would return to defending the featherweight belt.

In the co-main event, Khamzat Chimaev (13-0) defeated Kamaru Usman, the former welterweight champion, to earn a crack at the belt in the future.

Usman, who entered the battle less than two weeks prior, was knocked down right away and remained on the ground for the duration of the opening round. He fought in the second and third rounds, but was defeated by a majority vote.

Chimaev controlled the opening frame and almost locked in many chokes, giving the impression that he would get Usman out of there quickly.

However, there’s a reason Usman is among the greatest fighters of his generation and a former pound-for-pound champion. Over the course of the next two rounds, Usman, with only 11 days’ notice, drove the unbeaten Chimaev to the limit. Chimaev ultimately managed to defeat a majority vote (29-27, 29-27, 28-28).

Chimaev’s victory

Chimaev’s victory has qualified him for a middleweight title fight against Sean Strickland, the newly crowned champion. Coming into the fight, ESPN had Usman rated sixth in the world, pound for pound.

In his postfight interview, Chimaev stated, “I didn’t come here for the title.” “Get rich, have a good life, and fight someone.”
