Erdogan after survival
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after survival? Yes. There was a bet by the Turkish opposition and others from various parties, on the defeat of Erdogan and his party in the presidential and parliamentary elections that took place last May. But Erdogan and the Justice and Development Party remained in power by a small margin.
Margin is a victory, but it brings with it many challenges at home and abroad. This concerns the Turks, as well as other regions, Arab and other, where Turkish expansion is achieved through both rough and “soft” military means. So, this topic was the magazine’s cover story for the July issue.
In fact, my visit to Ankara and Istanbul in June, and my meetings with officials loyal to Erdogan and opponents of him from different generations and sects, summarize the Turkish scene in three points: a street divided between those loyal to Erdogan and his party, and another negative or hopeless segment. The political opposition is dispersed and fragmented after losing a “rare opportunity” in the recent elections. There is a great feeling of “painful victory” among Erdogan, his party, and his loyalists.

In this issue, we visit – with field investigations – the “arenas” of the Turkish incursion into the Arab world, as a former UN advisor explains the Turkish army’s expansion into eastern Libya after going deeper into its west. An investigation from northeastern Syria shows that the institutionalization of the “Kurdish administration” is a source of concern for Ankara, with another global concern due to the presence of… ISIS elements and the possibilities of its return as an organization and intertwining of its “sleeper cells” and the dangers of a “time bomb” exploding in a large camp for ISIS families. Another field report, from northern Iraq, shows Turkey’s “stability” there and its intensification of its military operations against the “Kurdistan Workers’ Party.”
