Some information on the Kentucky Derby

Just one of the 14 races planned for the day at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, is the 150th running of the Derby.

The Triple Crown of horse racing, which also consists of the Preakness Stakes (scheduled on the third Saturday in May) and the Belmont Stakes (held on the first or second Saturday in June), begins with the Derby, commonly referred to as the Run for the Roses.

The distance covered by three-year-old thoroughbreds in the Derby is 1 1/4 miles. With a $5 million purse, the victor of today’s Derby will take home $3.1 million. Typically, the race lasts about two minutes. (It’s touted as sports’ most thrilling two minutes.)
