Compared to other printers we’ve tried, the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw offers a very user-friendly, smartphone-style touch interface together with a modern mobile app that together make everyday use much less frustrating.

It generates crisp black text, vivid full-color images, and images suitable for a report card.

With a maximum speed of about 22 pages per minute, it is also quick. Moreover, a convenient bypass slot allows it to print on odd-sized media, such as envelopes and labels.

However, because the major menu options are positioned above a black bar that might be challenging to see, switching between the different print settings might be problematic for those with impaired vision.

Although prints are reasonably priced at 3.3¢ and 16.3¢ for each black and color page, respectively, HP’s software only allows it to print with its own brand of toner, so refilling the cartridges is still an investment.

Considering its average price of about $150 and average print cost per page of 2.7¢, the Brother HL-L2350DW is less expensive to acquire and use than our other recommendations.

This model fits more readily on a bookshelf or on a small desk space because it is only 7.2 inches tall. However, it can only print in black and white; it cannot scan or duplicate.

The Brother MFC-L2750DW and our budget choice, the HL-L2350DW, have identical running costs, print speeds, and connectivity options. On top of it is a quick, single-pass duplexing automatic document feeder and a flatbed scanner. As long as you don’t need color, this model is a wonderful all-purpose choice for home offices.
