On Tuesday night, five persons, including four students, were shot on the campus of Morgan State University in Baltimore. This led to a shelter-in-place order that lasted for hours and the cancellation of classes for Wednesday. A shooter has not yet been found by the police.

Windows had been broken

Around 9:25 p.m., Mr. Worley claimed, police officers who were on normal patrol on campus heard gunshots. When police arrived, they discovered the victims and saw that several windows had been broken, which led them to assume that there was a gunman in the area.

A shelter-in-place order was quickly issued by the Baltimore Police Department and was later rescinded early on Wednesday.

University police reacted after hearing gunshots at 9:25 p.m. local time and discovered numerous victims on campus as well as numerous broken windows, according to Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley.

SWAT

Students and faculty were advised to stay indoors and avoid the area as a SWAT team and officials from numerous agencies searched for the perpetrator at the university, a small HBCU in northeast Baltimore.

At this moment, we have not located the suspect, according to Worley. As of early Wednesday morning, the authorities had not released a suspect description, and it is unknown if the culprit is connected to the school.

Authorities lifted the shelter in place order after stating that the incident is no longer considered an active shooter scenario.

University’s website

According to a statement on the university’s website, “Please avoid the area near Thurgood Marshall Hall and the Murphy Fine Arts Centre and shelter in place.” According to the police, they were called to the 1700 block of Argonne Drive.

A historically Black institution, Morgan State has roughly 9,000 students enrolled in the Autumn of 2022. The incident took place as it was preparing to welcome alumni and community members to campus for festive festivities like a pep rally, gala, and parade at the start of its Homecoming week.

Additionally, it occurs just a few days before a planned candlelight memorial event to remember university employees who have passed away in the previous year.

On Wednesday, classes will be cancelled and counsellors will be accessible, according to Morgan State University President David Wilson.

Police have not identified a suspect

According to Mr. Worley, the police have not identified a suspect or made any arrests. He did, however, add that it was only when it was established that there was no longer an active shooter scenario that the shelter-in-place order was lifted.

“We didn’t open the campus up until our SWAT team had cleared the building where the suspect may have ran, or where we thought the shot came from,” he added, adding that the police believed the incident had taken place outside.

According to Lance Hatcher, the university police chief, four of the five injured victims were Morgan State University students. David Kwabena Wilson, the president of the university, announced that he had postponed courses at least till Wednesday.

The university had advised visitors to avoid the vicinity of Thurgood Marshall Hall, a dormitory facility, and the close-by Murphy Fine Arts Centre until the shelter-in-place order was withdrawn.

The 1700 block of Argonne Drive, which corresponded to the address of the dormitory building, was the location of an active shooter, according to earlier police reports.

Federal authorities

Federal authorities that are aiding with the reaction to the shooting include the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Maryland’s Gov. Wes Moore stated that his administration was aware of the circumstance.

A week of events leading up to the school’s homecoming game on Saturday included the shooting. The Murphy Fine Arts Centre, one of the locations the school recommended guests to avoid, was where Mister and Miss Morgan State were to be crowned on Tuesday night.

Glenmore Blackwood visited the school after learning about the incident from his son, a senior, who informed him that it happened as the coronation celebrations were coming to an end.

On the Michigan State University campus in February, a shooter injured five others in addition to killing three students.

According to its website, the university, which now has over 9,000 students enrolled, was originally established in 1867 as the Centenary Biblical Institute with the goal of preparing men for ministry.

It was transferred to its current location in north-east Baltimore in 1917, and the state of Maryland purchased it in 1939 with the intention of giving Black inhabitants better opportunity.
